An Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
Program for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
|
|
|
- The Brooklyn Blue Feather accepts children between 5 and 12
years of age. Children must exhibit behavioral
characteristics associated with autism and must have an
educational classification of autism. Children must be
referred by the Central Based Support Team (CBST) and must be
recommended for a Non-Public School (NPS) placement.

(PECS) Picture Exchange Communication System; (TEACCH) Treatment
and Education of Autistic and other related Communication
handicapped Children; Sign Language; AAC Devices/Communication
Devices & Sensory Integration

Instructional Programs: |
- The ABA approach is research-based methodology proven to be
effective in teaching children with autism. In addition,
TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and other related
Communication handicapped Children), a service delivery model
which provides structure to assist children with transitions and
organization as well as (PECS) Picture Exchange Communication
System, Sign Language, AAC Devices/ Communication Devices
Dance/Creative Movement, Drama & Sensory Integration services.
All of these services for the NYS Learning Standards.

- The instructional program focuses on teaching basic academic
speech, language, self-help, and daily living skills, as well as,
appropriate social skills. The Brooklyn Blue Feather
Elementary School follows New York State Education Department
Learning Standards and all children are assessed alternatively.
The school utilizes the Individualized Goal Selection (IGS) and
Syracuse Curriculum. Children are introduced to small group
instruction and then larger group instruction. The staff to
child ratio is 8:1:4, 8:1:1 and 8:1:2.
The ultimate goal is to help children achieve the level of
functioning that will allow them to transition to less restrictive
environments.
