The mission of AHRC New York City’s Day Services is to support people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injury, and autism spectrum disorders to live self-determined and meaningful lives in their communities.

People supported in our Day Habilitation programs are provided with ongoing opportunities to build relationships and participate in their local communities.  Here are the types of services offered by AHRC NYC’s Day Services.


Day Habilitation

Day habilitation is offered in a variety of environments to best support a person’s preferences. This can include structured on-site programming, community-based programming, or a combination of the two. Each person is offered an array of opportunities and experiences based on their choices, interests, and talents. All the services and supports are designed to enrich people’s lives.

Community Volunteer Opportunities

AHRC New York City Day Services partners with local organizations to develop volunteer opportunities. In accordance with a person’s interests and values, each person participates in volunteer activities of their choosing that allow for active citizenship while helping to prepare them for meaningful employment.

Independent Travel Instruction

We have developed a comprehensive, award-winning program for independent travel instruction, available to people who participate in our Day Service programs. Instruction includes basic safety skills and problem-solving while navigating the complex web of New York City public transportation.

Communication and Assistive Technology

Recent advances in technology have enabled people with communication challenges to communicate more efficiently. Communication support devices are used to give people with challenges a way to express themselves thereby allowing them to be more independent, enhance their ability to direct their own lives and be a part of the community.

Creative Expression

AHRC New York City offers life-enhancing experiences through which adults can choose to express themselves, including film-making, drawing, painting, photography, and music. Creative exhibitions and performances enable artists to share their passions, and to express their individuality, while providing them with a means of connecting to their neighbors in the community.

Partnerships for Innovation

AHRC New York City has developed an extensive network of partners in universities and community colleges that include Pace University, Pratt University and Long Island University. Students at these institutions and people with disabilities spend time together and learn from one another.

Traumatic Brain Injury

AHRC New York City provides an array of community-based and medically-based rehabilitation services for people with Traumatic Brain Injuries, (TBI). A person may receive services for as long as needed, either post-discharge from a formal rehabilitation setting or as a complement to those services. In supervised community settings, AHRC NYC professionals help people work towards their rehabilitation goals. People are provided with a full day of community-based skill development, a variety of educational, cultural, and volunteer opportunities. Psychological services are also available.
