At Camp Anne and the Katy Isaacson and Elaine Gordon Lodge, AHRC NYC’s two sleepaway summer camps located in upstate New York, campers and guests are treated to bucolic settings, endless activities, and a chance to discover more about themselves away from New York City.

Everyone attending the camps gets an annual T-shirt with a logo designed by an AHRC NYC artist, a tradition stretching back more than a decade, according to Sam Emsell, Director of The Lodge.

People collect the camp t-shirts and wear them out and about during the year,” Sam said. “Having personal artwork on display for New York City to see is great.”

The 2024 logo design was created by Lineton Gilchrist from William F. May Day Services. He is experienced in mediums including pencil sketching, manga, graphic design, GIF animations, and flip books. He began his art journey at McSweeney High School, located near the ArTech campus at Howie Stone Day Services in the Bronx.

I’ve seen people sketch logos and make their own designs,” Lineton said. “They use their creative, imaginative ideas in the world. It inspires me. When I see artists making their own logos, it makes me want to come up with my own designs.”

Symbolizing Tradition

This year’s camp logo features a dark background dotted with stars, with an elliptical yellow and white fire on top of a wooden firepit. Lineton said it took him 10 minutes and 45 seconds to complete it. He received a free t-shirt and a gift card for submitting the winning design.

I wanted the campers to wear something interesting,” he said. “I use my iPad Pro and then I use the app called Procreate.” He has a sketch pad where sketches the characters and designs on paper first, and then he transfers the work to the app using a digital pen.

Carlos W. Encarnación-Vázquez, a teaching artist at ArTech, said “For this logo design, Lineton used an editor application on his tablet device. He is familiar with creating digital artworks including drawings, animations and stop-motion videos. His works are influenced by anime, cartoons and pop culture imagery.”

Sam Emsell said the design was an overwhelming favorite among staff, campers, and guests. “At the start of every session, we sit around the fire and go over the rules, and we sing songs together. For me, a campfire represents this longstanding tradition.”
