The Good Men Project: How a Café Is Tackling the Disability Employment Crisis

The Good Men Project published an article about Café Joyeux, a small coffee shop in Midtown Manhattan, making a difference by employing, training, and empowering people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, working with local NYC disabilities services organizations, such as AHRC New York City, in hopes of showing their value to the workforce to other companies.

Michele Shapiro, director of employment and business services at AHRC NYC, said that stigma and misconceptions about people with disabilities continue to create barriers and a significant employment gap. “It’s about changing people’s perceptions and showing that given the opportunity, people with disabilities can succeed,” said Shapiro.
