On Monday, April 14, 2014, SHREDability, (an AHRC New York City-run business,) hosted a visit from Bronx Borough President, Ruben Diaz Jr., who met with the workers, toured the facility, and learned more about the company.  SHREDability is a sustainable, social enterprise providing secure document destruction to the Bronx and other boroughs in New York City.  The business currently provides shredding to over 300 private businesses in the New York City area, 66 of which are located in the Bronx.

The tour was led by Steve Towler, Assistant Executive Director, AHRC New York City.  Steve introduced the Borough President to the SHREDability workers, who explained how the machinery works and demonstrated the shredding process. As a part of the tour, Borough President Diaz was invited to participate in one of the most common activities conducted in the plant; the weighing of the shredding bins that have been collected from the offices of SHREDability’s clients.

As a socially conscious, plant-based recycling company, SHREDability employs 18 people with disabilities and has continued to grow since its founding in 2011.  The business is an extension of AHRC New York City’s Employment and Business Services, which is committed to helping people with disabilities to lead rich lives by providing them with employment opportunities.

The visit was covered by a reporter from Bronx News 12, who interviewed Ruben Diaz Jr. during his visit. He described his dedication to supporting businesses in the Bronx during his first term in office.  “This is an amazing business model…” said Mr. Diaz.  “I can’t stress moreIf you’re a Bronx business, whether you’re a hospital like Montefiore, St Barnabas, or the VA, [Veterans Administration] and you need your secure documentation destroyed in a way that provides jobs to Bronxites, Shredability are the people to call.”

As a parting gift, the Borough President was provided with a shredding bin, for use by his staff in Bronx Borough Hall.  SHREDability thanks the Borough President for taking the time to meet each of the workers, and to share his thoughts about SHREDability’s mission, and for his support of Bronx-based businesses and the work forces that drive them.
