Senate Passes Bill, House to Vote on Devastating Medicaid and SNAP Cuts

The Senate has passed Senate HR1,  which would enact devastating Medicaid and SNAP cuts for millions of Americans, especially in New York. The bill now goes to the House where just three votes against the bill can sink it.

One of the many harmful provisions in the bill includes stringent work requirements for people receiving Medicaid. Numerous studies confirm that work requirements disproportionally affect people with disabilities. For example, in 2018 Arkansas enforced work requirements like the ones included in this new bill that resulted in more than 18,000 people losing healthcare coverage. Similar results were seen in Georgia in 2024.

Our partners at The Arc presented this summary of how Medicaid and SNAP cuts affect people with developmental disabilities and their families.

There can be no overstatingthis bill will do extreme harm to people with disabilities, their families, and the providers who care for them. The steep Medicaid and SNAP cuts in this bill exist only to fund unnecessary tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy. It is simply immoral.
