OPWDD: Governor Hochul Announces Awards for ‘Step-Down’ Programs for Hospitalized New Yorkers Living With Mental Illness & Developmental Disabilities

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced awards to establish five ‘step-down’ programs to help adults across New York State living with co-occurring mental illness and intellectual or developmental disabilities to safely transition back into their community following care within an inpatient setting, including an additional program for AHRC NYC.

For five years, AHRC New York City has partnered with NYC Health + Hospitals, and now New York State Office of Mental Health and NYS Office for People With Developmental Disabilities to enable people with developmental disabilities, autism and suspected IDD and autism, who have co-occurring mental health diagnoses, to exit unnecessary hospital stays and move into a community transition program, one with intensive clinical and case management supports. AHRC NYC’s Intensive Case Management / Technical Assistance Program helps prevent medically unnecessary and extended hospitalizations while improving the functional status and quality of life for all served.

Many thanks to New York Governor Kathy Hochul for supporting this initiative.
