AHRC New York City

Advocating for people with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities to lead full and equitable lives.

AHRC NYC specializes in community-based rehabilitation services tailored to individuals with Traumatic Brain Injuries, (TBI) to promote functional independence skills & active engagement in community life.

All participants must be provided with either a DOH (Department of Health) waiver or an OPWDD (Office for People with Developmental Disabilities) waiver for TBI services. Participants diagnosed before the age of 22 receive an OPWDD Waiver, while those diagnosed after 22 are enrolled with a DOH waiver.

Support and Skill Development, in a Nurturing Environment

We understand that the needs and support required for individuals with TBI differ significantly from those of Day Habilitation Services. While participants can certainly participate in regular Day Habilitation activities, we acknowledge that the skill-building and support provided are distinct. Our unique diagnosis-specific service ensures that people receive the specialized day services they need to develop functional and independent skills while actively engaging in community life.

Operating throughout all boroughs of New York City, our TBI day programs offer transportation services to and from our locations in the Bronx and Brooklyn. Throughout the day, we naturally integrate opportunities for participants to learn self-determination skills such as making choices, problem solving, and self-advocating, as they navigate community life. Through real-world, hands-on experiences and the space to try things for themselves, participants develop independent living skills, build relationships, and explore their unique passions and interests.

Activities for Individuals with a Traumatic Brain Injury

Our programs offer a comprehensive range of interest-based activities. Participants have the opportunity to engage in social groups, art projects, and community volunteering, while learning essential independent living skills such as cooking and financial literacy. We provide comprehensive psychological services that address the unique needs of each person supported, ensuring individualized support for their overall well-being. Our dedicated team of professionals collaborate to offer the guidance and support needed to help them achieve their specific rehabilitation goals.
