The Partnership for Inclusive Internships (PII) is a public-private partnership developed by AHRC New York City to foster diversity and inclusive hiring within New York City and State government through an inclusive internship program.
The Partnership for Inclusive Internships Program works with the New York State Office of Adult Career and Continuing Education Service – Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) and New York State Commission for the Blind (NYSCB) to provide internships, or community work experiences, for people with disabilities.
The PII Program facilitates internships in the following fields:

The PII program partners with a wide variety of City, State and Federal Agencies. Some of our participating agencies include the NYC Department of Social Services (DSS), the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), the NYS Department of Health (DOH) and the United States District Court, Southern District of New York.
The PII Program provides individualized support for each intern
Interns receive 1:1 check-ins with a PII Program Coordinator and have access to PII work readiness groups. The PII program also facilitates events where interns can receive resources, make networking connections, and meet other program participants. Topics for these programs include financial literacy, executive functioning skills, mock-interview training, soft skills training, and Civil Service 101 courses.

Finance Consultant Intern, NYC Schools (DOE)

Program Description
The Special Education Office seeks a Finance Consultant to support workstreams related to procurement and budget management. All work is performed in accordance with agency, city, state and federal requirements and procedures, including those of the Procurement Policy Board and the Mayor’s Office of Contracts. Performs related work.
Intern Responsibilities
- Works with the Financial Accounting Management Information System (FAMIS) to support all financial related matters including past and current invoices, purchase orders, inventory, and sourcing quotes as needed.
- Assists with the execution of out-of-town travel-related requests. Prepares the Travel package and communicates with the traveler to ensure that reimbursement requests are paid for in a timely manner.
- Supports with Parent member Stipends (SIPPs). Tracks, logs and maintains record keeping of all items.
- Collaborates with the SEO Finance Operations Team in the management of the operational budget to ensure the responsible use of tax levy, reimbursable and grant funds; supports the identification and research of new funding opportunities.
- Collaborates with the Director of Finance & Operation and SEO Finance to gather information, explain processes and procedures, and provide financial reports and updates on a regular basis and as needed.
- Adheres to all programmatic and operating policies to ensure appropriate organizational decision-making.
Required Skills
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and 6 months of satisfactory full-time professional experience in procurement of goods, services, construction, or construction-related services, or professional, technical or administrative experience in contract negotiation/management; or
- An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college, and 18 months of satisfactory, full-time professional experience as described in “1” above; or

Program/Agency Description
The Fair Fairs program is a mayoral initiative signed by the Mayor and Council Speaker of the house to provide discount Metro Card’s for low-income New Yorkers. The program since 2019 has provided discount Metro Card benefit to low-income New Yorkers a half-fare discount on subway and bus fares.
Intern Responsibilities
The program is seeking interns to assist in 4 areas.
- Specifically assisting program Administration with daily, weekly reports of staffing and staff processing units. Reviewing and completing daily program assessments to ensure program teams are meeting goals and accomplishing daily task.
- Communicating with the Senior Managers and Directors of program on site needs. The intern will participate in meeting with program managers and provide feedback on program and make recommendations as needed.
- Assisting program with analysis of statistical and quantitative data in a technical and systematic way, designs reports, charts, and graphs in excel by using standard graphic techniques and tools to depict or describe the managerial and operational performance of program areas. Identifies irregularities and errors and provides summary of findings, and recommendations are clear and concise to include all FF Metrics for review.

Program Description
MTA Accessibility is seeking an intern to contribute to the creation, updating, and editing of internal and customer-facing materials, resources, and web content. The selected candidate will support projects aimed at enhancing marketing resources for customer education on accessible transit at the MTA by developing and updating internal and external stakeholder content. Working closely with the MTA Accessibility team, the intern will be responsible for assisting in the development of effective communications strategies for internal and external stakeholders, creating a comprehensive plan and proposal for content creation, and update digital content to promote accessibility within a complex transit network.
This internship provides a unique opportunity for the selected candidate to participate in a dynamic and impactful way on initiatives designed to improve accessibility at the largest transit agency in North America. The selected candidate will be exposed to many different aspects of the agency, working with staff across all MTA’s divisions, including New York City Transit, MTA Bus Company, Long Island Railroad, Metro North Railroad, MTA Headquarters, Capital Construction & Development, and Bridges & Tunnels.

Program Description
The Bureau of Adult Special Populations (BASP) sits within the Medicaid Policy and Program division (called the Division of Program Development and Management) of the NYS Department of Health. The BASP strives to create policies and programs that support people with mental illness, substance use disorder, intellectual or developmental disabilities, chronic conditions, and physical disabilities to achieve maximum health, independence, and quality of life. Working closely with the Office of Mental Health (OMH), the Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS), the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), and the AIDS Institute, the Bureau cultivates excellence in collaboration, program development, special projects, and policy knowledge and implementation.
The BASP has recently engaged in an effort to create a data definition for People with Physical Disabilities (PWPD). Once created, the BASP will be able to use this data definition to gain insight into the healthcare needs and outcomes of the PWPD population. In order to create a data definition of PWPD, the Bureau met with a number of disability advocates and government officials who weighed in on what Medicaid data could be used to determine whether or not an individual has a physical disability. As part of this ongoing work, the BASP is looking to build competency and fluency in understanding this population, their healthcare needs, the social, political, and environmental issues they face, and what policy implications this information holds. This work will culminate in the creation of recommendations for SFY 2024 Budget proposals that could positively impact the lives of New Yorkers living with physical disabilities. This position reports to the Medicaid Program Advisor.
Intern Responsibilities
- Research population needs, related regulations, legislation, and policy
- Submit data requests; think critically about data outputs; create data visuals (charts and graphs)
- Write concise research briefs including data findings
- Work with Team Lead and DOH’s Data Division to get approval for public-facing data materials
- Create meeting materials including agendas and PowerPoints; take meeting minutes when necessary
- Meet with stakeholders to discuss data, policy implications, potential budget proposals, and other potential policy needs
- Draft summaries of potential budget proposals including citations and data information
- Other duties as necessary.

Mediation Tech Support Intern, The US District Court for the Southern District of New York (SDNY)

Program Description
The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York encompasses the counties of New York, Bronx, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess and Sullivan and draws jurors from these counties. The court hears cases in Manhattan, White Plains, and Poughkeepsie, NY.
The mission of the Mediation Program is to provide quality dispute resolution services at the earliest practicable stage. The program is comprised of mediators with a diverse range of experiences and backgrounds who share the goals of providing parties with opportunities for supported negotiation, exploration of legal and factual issues, creative thinking, and settlement through mediation. The Mediation Program at the US District Court works with 250 volunteer mediators, who collectively mediate 1500 cases each year.
Intern Responsibilities
The Mediation Tech Support Intern will be trained to run the Zoom platform for volunteer mediators. The intern will assist with certain aspects of case management, and may be assigned some research assignments related to ADR/Mediation Practice
- Manage the Zoom platform for video meetings and conferences related to mediations
- Assist with case management in the mediation program

- Interns can observe mediation sessions and attend court proceedings if such attendance is permitted by the Court.
