The Partnership for Inclusive Internships (PII) is a public-private partnership developed by AHRC New York City to foster diversity and inclusive hiring within New York City and State government through an inclusive internship program.

The Partnership for Inclusive Internships Program works with the New York State Office of Adult Career and Continuing Education Service – Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) and New York State Commission for the Blind (NYSCB) to provide internships, or community work experiences, for people with disabilities.


The PII Program facilitates internships in the following fields:

  • Data entry and analysis
  • Clerical aide
  • Accounting
  • Architecture
  • Human services
  • IT
  • Research
  • Public policy

The PII program partners with a wide variety of City, State and Federal Agencies. Some of our participating agencies include the NYC Department of Social Services (DSS), the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), the NYS Department of Health (DOH) and the United States District Court, Southern District of New York.

Interns receive 1:1 check-ins with a PII Program Coordinator and have access to PII work readiness groups. The PII program also facilitates events where interns can receive resources, make networking connections, and meet other program participants. Topics for these programs include financial literacy, executive functioning skills, mock-interview training, soft skills training, and Civil Service 101 courses.

Program/Agency Description

The Fair Fairs program is a mayoral initiative signed by the Mayor and Council Speaker of the house to provide discount Metro Card’s for low-income New Yorkers. The program since 2019 has provided discount Metro Card benefit to low-income New Yorkers a half-fare discount on subway and bus fares.

Intern Responsibilities

The program is seeking interns to assist in 4 areas.

  1. Specifically assisting program Administration with daily, weekly reports of staffing and staff processing units. Reviewing and completing daily program assessments to ensure program teams are meeting goals and accomplishing daily task.
  2. Communicating with the Senior Managers and Directors of program on site needs. The intern will participate in meeting with program managers and provide feedback on program and make recommendations as needed.
  3. Assisting program with analysis of statistical and quantitative data in a technical and systematic way, designs reports, charts, and graphs in excel by using standard graphic techniques and tools to depict or describe the managerial and operational performance of program areas. Identifies irregularities and errors and provides summary of findings, and recommendations are clear and concise to include all FF Metrics for review.
  4. Assist in PC banks

Required Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft EXCEL, Word, Power Point.
  • Punctual and willingness to work in a fast past and changing program.
  • Ability to work under minimum supervision.
  • Experience working directly with clients, or in a customer service role

Equitable Services Human Capital Intern, NYC Schools (DOE)

Program Description

The intern will join the team responsible for operationalizing the provision of equitable services to NYCPS students with disabilities attending private and parochial schools throughout the five boroughs.

Intern Responsibilities

  1. Scheduling interviews directly with candidates and sending interview invitations.
  2. Tracking interview processes, including the collection of information, through the end of the interview/hiring process.
  3. Liaising with all interviewees/candidates.
  4. Communicating updates to leadership on the status of all candidates.
  5. Support with onboarding candidates.

Customized Assistance Services provides clinically oriented services to HRA clients with medical, mental health and substance abuse issues. Its programs provide comprehensive and individualized services that assist clients to achieve their maximum degree of self-reliance. CAS services include psychiatric, medical, and vocational rehabilitation evaluations, housing eligibility services, crisis intervention, case management and assistance in obtaining benefits including Federal disability

Intern Responsibilities

  1. Assist with updating the SUPPM (Substance Use Policy and Program Monitoring) database to improve data accuracy, reporting, and accessibility.
  2. Support the planning and execution of SUPPM events designed to vocational opportunities for clients engaged in substance use treatment programs.
  3. Gain hands-on experience with data management and reporting systems.
  4. Develop project coordination and event planning skills through active participation in outreach events.
  5. Develop skills in program monitoring and substance use conditions.

Required Skills

  1. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Access, or other database management tools.
  2. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  3. Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders. Interest or experience in substance use issues, event planning, community outreach, or workforce development.

Program Description

NYC: ATWORK is an employment program that recruits, pre-screens, and connects New Yorkers with disabilities to jobs and internships with established business partners in both the public and private sectors.

The Office Intern is a temporary, entry-level position that provides valuable support and assistance to the NYC: ATWORK mission. This role is designed to offer a learning experience for individuals seeking to gain practical exposure to the workings of an office environment in city government. As an Office Intern, you will be involved in a wide range of administrative tasks and contribute to the smooth functioning of the office.

Intern Responsibilities

  1. Assist with day-to-day administrative tasks, data entry, photocopying, scanning, and organizing documents.
  2. Answer incoming calls, direct them to the appropriate personnel, and assist in responding to routine email inquiries.
  3. Assist in updating and maintaining databases, spreadsheets, digital filing, and other records as required.
  4. Participate in special outreach projects or initiatives involving research, data analysis, and presentation preparation.
  5. Support staff members by tabling events and transporting outreach materials from the office to event sites as necessary.
  6. Collaborate with other interns, employees, and supervisors to achieve departmental and organizational goals.

Required Skills

  1. A high school diploma or equivalent is required; a bachelor’s degree is
    preferred. Applicants interested in public administration, human/social
    services, business administration, marketing, and disability studies are
    encouraged to apply.
  2. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for effective
    interaction with team members and visitors; customer service experience is
    preferred.
  3. Handle sensitive information with discretion, maintaining confidentiality at all

  4. Demonstrated ability to pay close attention to details, ensuring accuracy in
    data entry and other administrative tasks.

Program Description

Workforce Operations Bureau within the Human Capital line of service in the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) is responsible for workforce planning, development, and talent acquisition initiatives for the City through the provision of strategic vision, oversight and management of learning and development, workforce analytics and citywide recruitment.

Intern Responsibilities

The intern will support the team responsible for management of NYC Urban Fellows Program, Civil Service Pathways Fellowship and Mayor’s Graduate Scholarship Program. Responsibilities include:

  1. Assist in responding to all program communications through email and by phone
  2. Assist in management of program applications: tracking, report creating
  3. Assist in scheduling and hosting program activities: info sessions, seminars, orientation activities
  4. Assist in developing and maintaining all fellowship databases, including contact lists, email groups, agency supervisor lists, etc.
  5. Assist in scheduling and coordinating fellowship interviews, including preparation of interview materials
  6. Assist in planning and arranging for logistical program needs – reserving rooms, printing materials.
  7. Performing other ad-hoc projects as assigned

Intern Responsibilities

The intern will support the team responsible for providing learning and development opportunities for current City employees across 80+ City agencies.

As a Learning and Development Intern, you will be responsible for the following tasks:

  1. Setting up classrooms in a timely and organized manner, including distributing program materials and classroom supplies such as markers and flipcharts
  2. Providing professional classroom assistance to effectively meet the needs of participants and instructors
  3. Setting up Open Enrollment and Agency Specific classes in our learning management system (NYCityLearn)
  4. Accurately and promptly updating participants’ attendance and class information, including vendor costs, in NYCityLearn as needed.
  5. Preparing and distributing Certificates of Completion to class participants appropriately.
  6. Gathering sign-in sheets and other relevant materials from offsite locations, including vendor sites
