The Partnership for Inclusive Internships (PII) is a public-private partnership developed by AHRC New York City to foster diversity and inclusive hiring within New York City and State government through an inclusive internship program.

The Partnership for Inclusive Internships Program works with the New York State Office of Adult Career and Continuing Education Service – Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) and New York State Commission for the Blind (NYSCB) to provide internships or community work experiences for people with disabilities.


The PII Program facilitates internships in the following fields:

  • Human services
  • IT
  • Research
  • Public policy

The PII program partners with a wide variety of City, State and Federal Agencies. Some of our participating agencies include the NYC Department of Social Services (DSS), the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), the NYS Department of Health (DOH) and the United States District Court, Southern District of New York.

Interns receive 1:1 check-ins with a PII Program Coordinator and have access to PII work readiness groups. The PII program also facilitates events where interns can receive resources, make networking connections, and meet other program participants. Topics for these programs include financial literacy, executive functioning skills, mock-interview training, soft skills training, and Civil Service 101 courses.

Program Description

The Research and Program Evaluation Analyst for Students with IEPs in NYC Public Schools will join the Specialized Programs team. Under the supervision and direction of the Director of Research and Program Evaluation, the Research and Program Evaluation Analyst will gather, analyze, and report on data of various types—quantitative and qualitative. The overarching objective is to support the Specialized Programs team conduct program evaluation through research methods that will inform the development of tools to assess fidelity of implementation of program models, the identification of program-specific metrics aligned to NYC Public Schools’ system-wide metrics and create a sustainable logic model for longitudinal studies of programs administered by the Specialized Programs team.

Intern Responsibilities

  1. Use methodologies appropriate to quantitative and qualitative research designs to gather, analyze, and report on data.
  2. Support the Director of Research and Program Evaluation in field-based data gathering processes including, but not limited to interview and observations.
  3. Work internally and externally to the Special Education with offices/divisions in NYC Public Schools to gather complimentary data and policies to construct directed arguments.

Required Skills

  1. Background in qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research design methodologies.
  2. Ability to analyze data using statistical software including, but not limited to MS Excel, Stata, R, SPSS, Tableau.
  3. Strong written and presentation skills; ability to present complex facts and figures to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  4. For (1), (2), and (3) above, the ideal candidate should hold a graduate and/or post graduate degree.

Program Description

Customized Assistance Services provides clinically oriented services to HRA clients with medical, mental health and substance abuse issues. Its programs provide comprehensive and individualized services that assist clients to achieve their maximum degree of self-reliance. CAS services include psychiatric, medical, and vocational rehabilitation evaluations, housing eligibility services, crisis intervention, case management and assistance in obtaining benefits including Federal disability.

Intern Responsibilities

Program Description

NYC: ATWORK is an employment program that recruits, pre-screens, and connects New Yorkers with disabilities to jobs and internships with established business partners in both the public and private sectors.

The Office Intern is a temporary, entry-level position that provides valuable support and assistance to the NYC: ATWORK mission. This role is designed to offer a learning experience for individuals seeking to gain practical exposure to the workings of an office environment in city government. As an Office Intern, you will be involved in a wide range of administrative tasks and contribute to the smooth functioning of the office.

Intern Responsibilities

  1. Assist with day-to-day administrative tasks, data entry, photocopying, scanning, and organizing documents.
  2. Answer incoming calls, direct them to the appropriate personnel, and assist in responding to routine email inquiries.
  3. Assist in updating and maintaining databases, spreadsheets, digital filing, and other records as required.
  4. Participate in special outreach projects or initiatives involving research, data analysis, and presentation preparation.
  5. Support staff members by tabling events and transporting outreach materials from the office to event sites as necessary.
  6. Collaborate with other interns, employees, and supervisors to achieve departmental and organizational goals.

Required Skills

  1. A high school diploma or equivalent is required; a bachelor’s degree is
    preferred. Applicants interested in public administration, human/social
    services, business administration, marketing, and disability studies are
    encouraged to apply.
  2. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for effective
    interaction with team members and visitors; customer service experience is
    preferred.
  3. Handle sensitive information with discretion, maintaining confidentiality at all

Program Description

The Family Engagement Team at the New York City Public School’s Special Education Office is a critical support to the Office’s engagement with students, families, and partners as we seek to foster an anti-ablest, inclusive culture at New York City Public Schools. You will join a dynamic team that is on the forefront of inclusion programs across our system, and under the supervision of the Innovation Coordinator, support the development of a new slate of citywide inclusion programs scheduled for launch at the start of school in September.

Intern, NYS Office of General Services, Office of Language Access

Program Description

Over 800 languages are spoken by New Yorkers and, of the 5.7 million New Yorkers who speak a language other than English at home, 2.5 million have limited English proficiency (LEP). For these New Yorkers, their limited English proficiency presents potential barriers to accessing important government programs and services.  

The New York State Office of Language Access (OLA) provides critical oversight and coordination across 49 New York State agencies to ensure that the statewide language access policy expanded and codified by Governor Hochul in April 2022, is implemented efficiently and effectively. The OLAs is a part of the Office of General Services (OGS), which also supports New York’s language access law by maintaining the State contract through which agencies are able to access contractors that provide language services.   Under the supervision of the Director, theOLA Intern will assist the NYS Office of Language Access in its role to provide important support in developing and implementing a strongest-in-the-nation language access law. 

Intern Responsibilities

  1. Assist in identifying and reaching out to potential wholesale and retail partners.
  2. Support customer relationship management, including follow-ups and inquiries.
  3. Conduct market research to identify sales opportunities and industry trends.
  4. Help maintain sales records, track orders, and organize customer data.

  6. Participate in virtual or in-person sales presentations and networking events.

Required Skills

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with updating resources and content on the Statewide Language Access Coordinator (LACs) website.
  • Organize the shared drive and SharePoint site, to archive information no longer applicable and flag files that need updating.
  • Support updating OLA’s Events Calendar, to include commemoration dates, conferences of note, and the like. The calendar helps plan our commemorations throughout the year, and we’ll often anchor new and related OLA projects to these dates, e.g., International Day of Sign Languages 2024.
  • Initiate and help facilitate the LAC Forum Discussions, to get more involvement from LACs.
  • Assist with data entry, such as tracking and consolidating monthly submissions from LACs on varying reports.
  • Track and save quotes, invoices, Purchase Order numbers, support with reimbursements in the Statewide Financial System, and create a Frequently Asked Question document with questions from LACs on the language services contract.
  • Conduct research on policies, programs, regulations and legislation in relation to Language Access and write concise research briefs including data findings, based on available and tracked data.
  • Support shared inbox and/or answering the main phone line by responding low-stake communications, using templated responses.
  • Manage the Zoom platform for virtual meetings related to Language Access.
  • Attend and support OLA meetings, including notetaking and troubleshooting
  • Administrative support, such as scheduling meetings and reserving conference rooms/meeting space in NYC and Albany.
  • Create documents to memorialize office processes, research findings, project reports, best practices and more to ensure team continuity.

Minimum Qualifications Required for Appointment

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and 6 months of satisfactory full-time professional experience; or
  • An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college, and 18 months of satisfactory, full-time professional experience; or
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and two and one-half years of satisfactory full-time professional experience.
  • Ability to work from our New York City Office. May be asked to travel on an as-needed basis.

Program Description

The ESY Program provides 12-month Special Class services to students with those recommendations on their IEPs. Students are recommended 12-month services if they are at risk for severe regression over the summer and represent 3-5% of students with IEPs in district schools. The primary aim of the program is to prevent learning loss (our official mandate) and we hope to see students make forward progress in their academic development as well as have a meaningful summer experience that includes making friends and having fun.

Intern Responsibilities

The ESY support intern works with families and schools and tracks student attendance and progress. The PII intern will support the program director by monitoring our inbox and in tracking program attendance.

  1. Respond to questions sent to the ESY inbox from families and schools (scripts will be provided)
  2. Track attendance from each of our 30 sites across the city
  3. Help document program success

Required Skills

  • Intern needs strong written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft office programs like Word and Excel.
  • Ability to set priorities and manage multiple tasks.

Technology Requirements

The intern will do most of their work on a PC and must be comfortable using the Office suite.

Travel Requirements

Occasional travel to visit ESY school sites. Sites will be accessible by public transportation.
