The Partnership for Inclusive Internships (PII) is a public-private partnership developed by AHRC New York City to foster diversity and inclusive hiring within New York City and State government through an inclusive internship program.


The Partnership for Inclusive Internships Program works with the New York State Office of Adult Career and Continuing Education Service – Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) and New York State Commission for the Blind (NYSCB) to provide internships or community work experiences for people with disabilities.
The PII Program facilitates internships in the following fields:
- Data entry and analysis
- Clerical aide
- Accounting
- Architecture
- Human services
- IT
- Research
- Public policy
The PII program partners with a wide variety of City, State and Federal Agencies. Some of our participating agencies include the NYC Department of Social Services (DSS), the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), the NYS Department of Health (DOH) and the United States District Court, Southern District of New York.
The PII Program provides individualized support for each intern

Interns receive 1:1 check-ins with a PII Program Coordinator and have access to PII work readiness groups. The PII program also facilitates events where interns can receive resources, make networking connections, and meet other program participants. Topics for these programs include financial literacy, executive functioning skills, mock-interview training, soft skills training, and Civil Service 101 courses.

Program/Agency Description
Fair Fares NYC (FFNYC) is a mayoral initiative designed to make public transportation more affordable for low-income New Yorkers. The program was officially launched in 2019 through a partnership between the Mayor of New York City and the City Council Speaker.
FFNYC provides eligible New Yorkers with a 50% discount on subway and eligible bus fares, helping to reduce the financial burden of commuting and improving access to jobs, education, healthcare, and other critical services.
Since 2024, the program transitioned from MetroCards to the OMNY system, New York City’s contactless fare payment method. Participants now receive OMNY cards preloaded with the half-fare discount, offering a more seamless and modern transit experience.
Intern Responsibilities
- Program Administration: Assist with staffing reports, monitor team performance, communicate with leadership on site needs, and attend meetings to provide feedback.
- Data Analysis & Reporting: Review and analyze program data, identify trends and errors, and prepare actionable summaries aligned with performance metrics.
- Report Development: Create visual reports in Excel and compile weekly/monthly summaries highlighting key findings.
- PC Bank Support: Help staff and clients with system use and troubleshooting at PC banks.

Clerical Intern, DSS IREA
Internship Title: Clerical Intern

Program Description
The DSS Accountability Office (DSS-AO)-IREA is responsible for protecting the integrity of social services programs administered by the New York City Department of Social Services (DSS) and ensuring that DSS complies with all statutory, regulatory and contractual standards.
The Revenue Office is a major component of IREA. It is responsible for the recovery of public assistance benefits paid to current and former participants. The Income Clearance Program (ICP) is a new member of the Department of Social Services-Accountability Office (DSS-AO). DSS-AO is responsible for protecting the integrity of social services programs administered by the NY City DSS and ensuring that DSS complies with all statutory, regulatory and contractual standards. ICP is responsible for the processing of various automated computer matches and other manual matches to uncover excess income or resources of program recipients.
Intern Responsibilities
- Prepare and maintain reports for four supervisors, ensuring accuracy and timely submission.
- Assist the Executive Director with various clerical tasks, including revising job descriptions, correspondence, and document management.
- Organize and maintain files and records, both physical and digital.
- Data entered statistical information for productivity and case distribution logs.
- Support team members with additional administrative tasks as needed
- Keep up with tasks from multiple supervisors and manage their time accordingly to meet deadlines.

Application Security Process Intern, ODSM
Internship Title: Application Security Process Intern

Division/Department: Software Security Assurance Team
Program Description
ODSM Software Security Assurance Team is looking for an intern with excellent communication and collaboration skills, self-starter and able to work well with others in a fast-paced agile environment, having a software development background and understanding will be a plus. The aspiring intern will work closely with the Software Security Assurance Team members to perform Application Security Tasks.
Intern Responsibilities
- Coordinate with Application Development Team
- Support implementation of security controls
- Assist Application Development Team to perform Threat Modeling
- Configure vulnerability scans
- Assist Application Development Team to identify mitigations to be applied to vulnerabilities found in scan results
- Coordinate with Development Teams to adopt Secured Development Lifecycle
- Work with Team Members on Team initiatives
- Research relevant security processes that can be adopted to enhance Application Security Process
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Security, or a related technical field.
- Understanding of application security principles, common vulnerabilities (e.g., OWASP Top 10), and secure software development practices.
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript, C/C++ or PowerShell.
- Knowledge of web security concepts, authentication protocols, and encryption standards.

The Department of Social Services (DSS) is comprised of the administrative units of the NYC Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS). Through integrated management for HRA and DHS, client services can be provided more seamlessly and effectively. The City leverages shared services functions across agencies, which results in better day-to-day management and building an integrated mission across agencies.

Chief Information Security Office/Data Security Management
The Office of Data Security Management (ODSM) secures the full lifecycle of technical project delivery for their DSS-AO customers. ODSM is responsible for implementing the Agency’s cybersecurity program. This office is tasked with continuously improving Agency’s risk posture by ensuring that appropriate security controls are in place to protect the confidentiality integrity and availability of Agency information resources.
Intern Responsibilities
As a Governance Risk and Compliance Intern, you will be responsible for:
- Supporting the development and implementation of the cybersecurity risk management program to ensure alignment with industry best practices and regulatory requirements including ISO 27001 and PCI-DSS standards.
- Supporting and performing the testing and validation of controls to ensure their effectiveness and adherence to established policies and procedures.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to identify risks while evaluating the design and operational effectiveness of controls to report opportunities for improvement.
- Collaborating with security, privacy, and legal counterparts to develop, review, and amend global cybersecurity policies and standards.
- Staying up-to-date on current cybersecurity threats, vulnerabilities, trends, and best practices to proactively evolve the cybersecurity risk and controls program.

Machine Learning (ML) Intern (Onsite), ODSM

Job Description
The ML intern will be a part of the Office of Data Security Management (ODSM), which is responsible for the implementation and management of the Department of Social Services’ (DSS) cyber security program. ODSM works closely with the Office of Innovation and Technology’s (OTI) Cyber Command to continuously improve the Agency’s risk posture. ODSM ensures that appropriate security controls are in place to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of Agency information resources. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the need to enhance DSS-HRA-DHS cyber security priorities as remote access and teleworking capabilities expanded exponentially.
Intern Responsibilities
- Work directly with a Cyber Security Analyst, under the direction of the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), on a new and exciting machine learning project to create and automate anomaly detection machine learning models.
- Sharpen your data science and ML pipeline skills by owning the project from inception, including data collection and cleaning, exploratory data analysis, data visualization, as well as training, testing, and tuning a model for production.
- Conduct query scripting using our Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tool to collect and aggregate data for analysis and ingestion into the ML model.
- Analyze and identify trends and patterns in user data related to system logs, network packets, and other logs that capture user behavior.
- Experiment with supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms such as clustering, regressions, classifiers, and neural networks.
- Improve the accuracy and performance of the model over the course of the internship.
Requirements
- A rising junior, senior, or graduate-level computer science or data science student or in a related field.
- Analytically minded with completed coursework in linear algebra, data science, machine learning or an equivalent knowledge of applied mathematics.
- Experience with Python packages such as Pandas, Numpy, Scikit-Learn, TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, Matplotlib, and/or Seaborn.
- Familiarity with a Windows Enterprise environment is a plus.
- Coursework or previous experience in Computer Security or Cybersecurity is nice to have.
Reports to
A Cyber Security Analyst as part of the Cybersecurity Operations and Incident Management team. Weekly meetings will be held to ensure that the ML intern is supported and progressing towards the project objectives.

Intern Responsibilities
ODSM is seeking an intern to assist with:
- Providing first level compliance monitoring and investigations
- Assist staff with forensics analysis and fact gathering
- Assist staff with vulnerability assessments and penetration testing for specific applications, services, networks, and servers, as required
- Utilize applications/tools including but not limited to SIEM, PIS, Netflow and SLP tools for various IT security day-to-day duties
- Assist with compliance audits against HRA/City of New York mandated security controls
- Record and track IT security incidents, including but not limited to copyright violations, compromised accounts, e-mail threats and abuse reports from various sources
- Conduct query scripting
- Other duties as assigned
